In the Grand Duchy, gifts are said to be brought by the baby Jesus, and not by Santa Claus, but traditions tend to vary from one family to another. On the Christmas Eve, the family gathers around the Christmas tree to have a snack and enjoy the magic of the moment. At midnight, the entire family goes to church, and they open their presents when they return.

Traditional Christmas dishes refer to stollen, a sort of bread with fruit and rum, and to the bûche de Noël ice cream. The black pudding and hare or game meats are also notable in this respect. On Christmas day, families usually go for a walk, admire the city decorations and enjoy the snow.
