Locally referred to as Buergbrennen, this holiday is an old tradition. It is held on the first Sunday of the Lent, and it symbolizes the victory of heat over the cold, of light over the dark, the coming of spring and the rebirth of nature.
Buergbrennen occasions huge wood, flammable materials and hay bonfires in the shape of a castle. Youngsters place a cross on top of these bonfires. Mulled wine and grilled meat or sausages are served during this holiday so the participants don’t feel the coldness of the night.
